Pongal Celebrations
Pongal Celebrations
Pongal, the vibrant harvest festival of the Tamil community, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy at CCKSS this year. The school came alive with colorful decorations, traditional music, and the cheerful spirit of CCKSians, teachers, and parents coming together to honor this meaningful occasion.
The celebration began with our Principal, Mr Cheng, taking part in the traditional preparation of Pongal, a sweet rice dish made with freshly harvested grains, milk, and jaggery. A beautifully decorated clay pot was placed at the center of the festivities, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. As the milk boiled over, everyone joyfully exclaimed “Pongalo Pongal!” — a traditional expression that reflects hopes for overflowing happiness and success in the year ahead.
Our Parent Support Group played a special role in the celebration by helping to conceptualise and decorate a vibrant cultural learning space. The area was adorned with a beautifully drawn kolam, along with traditional items associated with Pongal such as clay pots, and harvest decorations. Their effort created an authentic festive atmosphere and provided CCKSians with a meaningful visual experience that enhanced their understanding of the festival.
CCKSians were given the opportunity to learn about the significance of the four-day festival, which is dedicated to thanking nature, the sun, and farm animals for a successful harvest. Through engaging presentations and storytelling, many discovered how Pongal highlights the importance of gratitude, hard work, and respect for the environment.
The event also featured a variety of cultural performances. Lively folk dances captured the essence of rural celebrations in South India and the rhythmic beats and energetic movements created an atmosphere of excitement, drawing loud applause from the audience. Some CCKSians were also invited on stage to showcase their musical talents on traditional drums, adding to the festive mood.
Beyond the performances and activities, the Pongal celebration served as a reminder of the values that bring our CCKSian family together — unity, cultural appreciation, and mutual respect. It allowed CCKSians from diverse backgrounds to experience and understand the richness of Tamil traditions, fostering a stronger sense of inclusivity within the school.
The Pongal celebration at CCKSS was more than just a festival; it was a meaningful experience that strengthened bonds and encouraged everyone to pause and appreciate the blessings in their lives. With the wonderful support of the Parent Support Group, the event truly reflected the spirit of togetherness and community.
