TL & ML Unit Learning Journey to Little India & Kampong Glam
Secondary 1 Tamil & Malay Language Unit Learning Journeys to Little India & Kampong Glam
Our Secondary 1 CCKSians recently embarked on enriching Mother Tongue Learning Journeys, where students from the Malay and Tamil Language units experienced culture and heritage firsthand. These trips strengthened their language learning while deepening their appreciation of traditions.
Malay Language Unit at Kampong Glam
Our CCKSians visited Kampong Glam, a historic district rich in Malay culture.
A key highlight was the iconic Sultan Mosque, where they learned about
its historical and cultural significance. As they explored the vibrant
streets lined with traditional shophouses, students observed heritage landmarks
and local businesses, allowing them to connect classroom knowledge with
real-world experiences while gaining a deeper appreciation of the Malay
community. A visit to some heritage businesses also broadened their knowledge
of the concept of change and continuity as they observed how centuries
or decades old businesses have adapted to survive.
Tamil Language Unit at Little India
Our CCKSians travelled to Little India during the vibrant Pongal season,
where festive decorations, sugarcane, and traditional clay pots filled
the streets with colour and cheer. They admired intricate kolam displays
and learned about the festival’s message of gratitude, renewal, and community.
The journey also included a visit to the Indian Heritage Centre, where our CCKSians explored exhibits showcasing the history, culture, and contributions of the Indian community in Singapore. Adding to the excitement, they painted their own Pongal pots and tried their hands at Indian cultural activities associated with the harvest festival. These hands-on experiences made learning interactive and memorable, strengthening their connection to language through culture.
Together, these learning journeys allowed our CCKSians to step beyond textbooks, engage with living heritage, and develop a deeper sense of cultural awareness — making their Mother Tongue learning both authentic and unforgettable.
